Cardiff, the home of Equinox Communications, was listed as the 8th best city in the UK by Expedia yesterday. It got the team talking about what makes the city so special and we thought we’d share what we think are the best bits. Here’s the ‘not for tourists’ guide to experiencing Cardiff life:
Zara – walking over the Blackweir and watching salmon and kingfishers along the Taff Trail. Thankfully there’s loads of great stuff to do with children, farm centres, play centres, ballet classes, toddler gymnastics – the list is endless.
Helen – Roath. Whether it’s wandering around the quaint shops of Wellfield Road, strolling around the lake or enjoying dinner at its diverse range of restaurants, it’s a lovely place to hang out at the weekends.
Beth – The Wenallt in Rhiwbina. Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll or fast pacing it up the mountain, it’s pretty all year around. The Traveller’s Rest at the top is a great stopping place for a nice warm meal and even a cheeky local celebrity spot every now and again!
Eryl – International day in Cardiff city centre…the atmosphere is great, bars are full of good humour and camaraderie. When Wales take to the field at the Millennium Stadium you can physically feel the Welsh passion! Other than that, my local The Griffin!
Louise – my favourite places change with the seasons. I love walking around Roath lake in the spring, taking in the summer delights around Mermaid Quay, jogging or cycling alongside the river Taff in Bute Park in the Autumn, and the mulled wine in the Christmas markets in The Hayes gives me that festive feeling.
Katie – There are loads of things that have made an impression in the last four years I’ve lived in Cardiff – Thompsons park and the duck pond, Cibo’s Italian Restaurant in Pontcanna, walking over the barrage in Cardiff Bay, the cafe in the Audi Garage at Cardiff Gate (best jacket potatoes ever!) and the smell of baking each morning from the Memory Lane Cakes factory.
Elinor – Pontcanton (I can’t decide between the two!) – I love going to see live theatre at Chapter Arts Centre, catching up with friends over brunch in Brava and spending long, sunny days having BBQs in Pontcanna Fields. The range of great pubs along Cathedral Road makes for a great walk into town too!
Catrin – one of the biggest reasons why I ‘heart’ Cardiff is the food and drink offer. With its cosmopolitan eateries dotted around the city, it can cater for a serious foodie with places like Madame Fromage (a lunch-time favourite of mine), make any special occasion pretty perfect (a great birthday spent here) and there’s always somewhere new just waiting to be ‘taste’ tested.
Kate – Cardiff really is a city of arcades and I love to wander around them and explore the independent boutiques. Check out Amy Davies’ Arcades Project blog. My parents owned two shops in Castle Arcade so they will always hold a special place in my heart, as will the pizza slices from the take away window in Cafe Minuet! A baguette from Fresh in Royal Arcade is also a must. Then it’s a tossup between Roath and Bute Park to burn off the calories!
Cardiff, we love this city.
